When you go to a job interview, you might hear the question, “So, tell me about yourself.” This question sounds easy, but it can be tricky because it’s so open-ended.
What should you say? Should you talk about your life, your last job, or your skills? Here are some tips to help you answer this common question.
Focus on the Job, Not Your Life
Remember, your interview is about showing why you are a great match for the job. The interviewer has already seen your resume, so you don’t need to repeat what’s on it. Think of the interview like a performance where you show how you can fit into their team.
Career coach John Lees suggests imagining that the interviewers are picturing you working with them. You don’t need to share personal stories or hobbies right at the start. Save those for later in the interview when there’s time for more casual conversation.
Know What They Want
To give the best answer, read the job description carefully. Look for important phrases such as “required” or “must have.” Make sure to highlight these qualities in your answer.
Less important phrases such as “preferred” can take a backseat, even if you meet them. Pay close attention to what the company needs from this role. The job description might also give clues about whether the work environment is fun or serious.
Check the “About Us” section on the company’s website to learn about its culture and values.
Write down three key qualities they are looking for by completing this sentence: “They’re looking for someone who…”
Show You Fit the Need
Start your answer with phrases like “I’m someone who…” or “At work, my approach is…” Use your work experience to show how you meet the specific needs of the job you’re applying for. If possible, choose an example that is similar to the new job.
Practice your answer out loud before the interview. This way, you’ll be ready to show why you are a valuable candidate. This approach will help you stand out from other applicants, as you won’t just talk about yourself; you’ll explain why you matter to the organization!
