Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded to US President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion about merging Canada and the US. Trudeau shared that last November, during a conversation with Trump, the president-elect jokingly proposed that Canada should become the 51st state of the US. Trudeau lightheartedly suggested that they could trade Vermont or California for some Canadian provinces. However, he noted that Trump didn’t appreciate the joke.

On Thursday, while speaking to business leaders, Trudeau said that Trump’s comments were just a way to distract attention from serious issues, especially his proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Trudeau explained that these tariffs would only make things more expensive for American shoppers and could raise prices overall.

Earlier this week, Trudeau firmly stated that there’s “not a snowball’s chance in hell” Canada would join the United States. In turn, Trump had mentioned using “economic force” to try to convince Canada to become the 51st state, referring to issues like US military support and trade problems.

Finally, Trump is considering declaring an economic emergency to impose his tariffs, which would give him more power to take action.
