Al Pacino once said in Scarface that “the eyes don’t lie,” and this rings true for acting. In the new show Black Warrant, director Vikramaditya Motwane really focuses on the emotions shown through the actors’ eyes. This prison drama is intense, and even the quieter moments are well done.
What is Black Warrant About?
Black Warrant is based on a book by Sunil Gupta, a former jailer at Delhi’s Tihar Jail. The story follows Gupta (played by Zahan Kapoor) as he starts his job there. He learns the ropes while facing tough criminals, including the notorious Charles Sobhraj. Throughout his journey, he tries to impress his boss, DSP Tomar (Rahul Bhat), while managing challenges inside the prison.
The show feels real. While many streaming shows shock viewers with blood and gore, Black Warrant does this without being gross. It tackles uncomfortable topics honestly, without going overboard. Some historical details are changed for storytelling, but it still respects the true events.
Outstanding Performances
Zahan Kapoor shines as Sunil Gupta, displaying emotions like fear, innocence, and vulnerability. He reminds us of his grandfather, Shashi Kapoor, but brings his own charm to the role. His natural Delhi accent and style make the character relatable right from the start.
Rahul Bhat, as the tricky deputy jailer Tomar, manages to show both tough and soft sides. Paramveer Cheema and Anurag Thakur also bring depth to their characters. Plus, the guest appearances from talented actors add extra flair. Siddhant Gupta does an amazing job portraying killer Charles Sobhraj, and Rajshri Deshpande stands out as a fierce journalist.
Where Black Warrant Could Improve
While Black Warrant is engaging, it sometimes struggles with its stance on certain characters. For instance, it may unintentionally make the dangerous Billa and Ranga seem sympathetic, which is tricky. Also, the show’s glamorization of Charles Sobhraj can feel off when remembering his real-life victims. Finding the right balance of moral questions in a show like this can be challenging.
