Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced he will step down, but before his departure, he shared a message on Twitter to support California as the state fights serious wildfires. Over 140,000 people have had to evacuate their homes due to these fires. Trudeau posted a video showing Canadian water bombers—airplanes that drop water on fires—helping to put out the flames in California.
In his tweet, Trudeau wrote, “Neighbor helping neighbor,” and shared a powerful video of a Canadian aircraft spraying water on the wildfires. As of Thursday, six wildfires are still burning in Los Angeles and Ventura County, leading to many people having to leave their homes.
Trudeau expressed his sympathy for those affected by the fires, including those who have sadly lost their lives. He noted that Canada knows how to handle wildfires and has received help from California in the past. “Canadians are thinking of everyone in California affected by these wildfires,” he said.
He also mentioned, “Canadian water bombers are already in action on the front lines. We stand ready to provide more resources to our American neighbors.”
Amid this, many people online saw Trudeau’s help offer as a message to the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, who has talked about merging Canada with the U.S. to create the 51st state. The discussions around this idea became more intense after Trudeau said he would resign, following declining voter support. Despite this, he will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
