Filmmaker Payal Kapadia, known for her movie All We Imagine As Light, has been nominated for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award for best first-time director in 2025. This exciting news comes just after she missed winning the Golden Globe for best director, which went to Brady Corbet for his movie The Brutalist.

The DGA is a group that supports film and TV directors in the U.S. and around the world. Other first-time director nominees include Megan Park for My Old Ass, RaMell Ross for Nickel Boys, Halfdan Ullmann Tondel for Armand, and Sean Wang for Didi, according to Variety.

All We Imagine As Light has gained worldwide attention. It is Kapadia’s first full-length film and won the Grand Prix award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2024. Her film portrays love and loneliness through the lives of three women living in bustling Mumbai: two nurses, Prabha and Anu, and their friend Parvati. The movie stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam.

Kapadia, a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), previously received praise for her short film Afternoon Clouds (2017) and her documentary A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021). She has also been named Best Director by The National Society of Film Critics in New York. Many expect her to get a nomination for the BAFTAs as well.
