On Thursday, Raj Bhawan appointed new vice chancellors (VCs) for four universities in Bihar. These positions were filled after being managed by temporary leaders since August 2004. The appointment for a fifth university, which will be vacant on January 14, will take place later.

Sanjoy Kumar, who was the pro-VC at Nalanda Open University, has been named the VC of Munger University. Prof. Vivekanand Singh from NIT Patna is now in charge of Purnea University. Both of these universities were run by interim leaders since August 2024.

For Nalanda Open University, Prof. Ravindra Kumar, who teaches Philosophy at Patna University and was also a former pro-VC at BRA Bihar University in Muzaffarpur, has been appointed as the new VC. He will replace the old VC, KC Sinha, who left in August.

These appointments were made by the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of state universities, after discussing with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Also, Dr. Inderjeet Singh has been appointed as the VC of the Bihar Animal Sciences University, which was previously managed by the Bihar Agriculture University VC.

The new VCs will serve for three years starting from when they take office. According to a former VC, the selection considered both qualifications and the social aspects, showing the government’s intentions during election season.

Meanwhile, Aryabhatt Knowledge University VC Sharad Kumar Yadav has been given temporary charge of Pataliputra University starting January 15.

In August 2024, Raj Bhawan had put three state universities under temporary management until new VCs could be appointed. The chancellor’s office had called for applications for VC positions in June 2024, and interviews were completed while the previous Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, was in office.
