This week, President Joe Biden is set to announce new rules to punish Russia’s economy. He wants to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia before Donald Trump becomes president again. Along with these new rules, the Biden team is also getting ready to send $500 million in military aid to Ukraine. This aid will include air defense missiles, bombs for attacking from the air, and equipment for F-16 fighter jets.
Donald Trump, who will become president on January 20, has made some people in Kyiv hopeful that there might be a peaceful end to the fighting, but others are worried that this peace deal could cost Ukraine too much. Some of Trump’s advisers have suggested giving parts of Ukraine to Russia to stop the war.
Biden’s team wants to make sure Ukraine is strong on the battlefield to have a better chance in talks with Russia for peace. There aren’t many details yet about the new rules Biden plans to put in place, but Biden’s team is keeping Trump’s team informed about their plans.
Most of the weapons promised to Ukraine have already been sent, and the rest are on the way. Ukraine now has a good supply of important munitions. President Zelenskiy of Ukraine has often asked for stronger weapons support, which has created some tough talks with the Biden team about tanks, fighter jets, and missiles.
Looking back, a U.S. official said that none of these weapons have given Ukraine the major wins they hoped for on the battlefield. Ukraine might need security promises, including the possibility of joining NATO, to stay safe from Russia after peace talks.
Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Meanwhile, U.S. military officials are closely watching North Korea’s actions in the Ukraine war to learn how to handle any future conflicts in Asia since thousands of North Korean soldiers are believed to support Russia in the war.
The U.S. is also planning to impose more sanctions on Chinese companies that help Russia. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen mentioned last month that the U.S. wants to decrease Russia’s money from oil and limit its access to supplies to support the war.
