High winds made a big fire worse in the Pacific Palisades area of Southern California on Tuesday. The fire affected more than 60,400 people, including families of famous basketball coaches JJ Redick from the Los Angeles Lakers and Steve Kerr from the Golden State Warriors. The fire started around 10:30 a.m. during strong Santa Ana winds and quickly spread through the hillside neighborhoods of Los Angeles. Many homes were destroyed in this wealthy area, where many celebrities live. Officials said over 30,000 people had to evacuate their homes, but they are still figuring out how many buildings were damaged or burned.
Before his game against the Dallas Mavericks, Redick said, “I just want to send thoughts and prayers to everyone in the Palisades right now.” He shared that his family had to leave and that many people were worried about the strong winds likely to return at night.
The Lakers’ flight back to Los Angeles was still on schedule, even though they thought about taking different routes due to the smoke. The winds were expected to get stronger overnight, with speeds over 100 mph in some areas. No one has been hurt so far, and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Steve Kerr also shared his concern for those affected by the fire, including his 90-year-old mother, Ann, who had to evacuate. After his team’s game against the Miami Heat, Kerr said, “I want to send my thoughts and condolences to everyone in Los Angeles dealing with the fires.” He added that the situation looked very scary.
