This week in Florida, CNN is facing a legal battle. A Navy veteran named Zachary Young says CNN hurt his business when they showed his face in a story about a “black market” for getting Afghans out of danger after the U.S. left Afghanistan in 2021. Young helped evacuate Afghans and advertised his services online, but CNN’s report made it seem like he was doing something illegal.

Young’s lawyer, Kyle Roche, told jurors that this case is important for the media. He said, “You have a chance to send a message to mainstream media.” This case is raising concerns as many people are unhappy with news outlets right now.

Defamation lawsuits, like Young’s against CNN, are rare because it’s hard to prove them in the U.S. In fact, ABC News recently paid Donald Trump $15 million to settle a libel case instead of going to trial. Young’s complaint stems from a CNN show on November 11, 2021, which discussed the risks Afghans faced after the Taliban took over.

Young claims the “black market” label made him look like a criminal, which he insists he is not. CNN argues that they didn’t specifically accuse Young of any wrongdoing. They also publicly apologized for the error but that didn’t stop Young from suing them.

CNN maintains that their reporting was fair and accurate. They believe there is no evidence that Young’s business suffered because of the story. However, the trial could uncover some unflattering details about CNN, including internal messages that may not make the network look good.

The ongoing trial comes at a challenging time for CNN, which is already facing low ratings. Experts believe that any negative outcomes from this trial could further damage the reputation of news organizations, especially in a climate where public trust in the media is declining.
