Greenland’s leader is heading to Copenhagen to meet the Danish king on Wednesday. This meeting comes after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, which is a part of Denmark. Trump, who will take office on January 20, mentioned he might consider military or economic actions against Denmark to make Greenland a part of the United States.

On the same day, Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., visited the island, which is rich in natural resources. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, arrived in Copenhagen and had planned to meet the king, but it was said to be postponed. However, the Danish royal court later confirmed the meeting would happen, without giving more details.

Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has been ruled by Denmark for 600 years but manages many of its own affairs. Recently, tensions have grown between Greenland and Denmark due to complaints about past treatment of Greenlanders during colonial times.

Prime Minister Egede has firmly stated that Greenland is not for sale and has been advocating for the island to gain independence from Denmark. Denmark also insists that Greenland cannot be sold, and its future should be determined by its own people. In 2019, Trump canceled a planned visit to Denmark after the Danish Prime Minister said no to selling Greenland.
