U.S. President Joe Biden praised Canada and its Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as important allies. This comes as Donald Trump has been threatening to impose tariffs on Canadian goods if Canada doesn’t join the U.S. as its “51st state.”

Biden expressed his admiration in a message on social media, saying, “The United States has chosen to connect its future with Canada because we know no better ally, friend, or partner. The same can be said for Prime Minister Trudeau. The U.S.-Canada relationship is stronger because of him. Our nations are safer because of him, and the world is better because of his leadership. I’m proud to call him my friend.”

Since he won the election, Trump has repeatedly called for Canada to consider becoming part of the United States, calling Trudeau a “governor.” He promised tax cuts for Canadian businesses if Canada were to join.

According to Canadian government figures, Canada had a trade surplus with the U.S., meaning it sold more goods to America than it bought from them. In November 2024 alone, Canada’s exports to the U.S. rose by 6.8% while imports increased by 4.1%, widening the trade surplus to $8.2 billion.

Trump recently stated that he would use “economic force” instead of military action against Canada, prompting a strong response from Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly. She mentioned that Trump doesn’t understand what makes Canada strong and that Canada would not be intimidated by his threats.

Trudeau also commented on social media, saying, “There’s no chance Canada would ever become part of the U.S. Our countries are better as partners in trade and security.”
