As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office again, experts believe many important topics could change under the new administration. Things like climate change and LGBTQ rights might not be talked about as much or even removed from government websites and documents.

In the past, under Trump’s first term, many mentions of climate change disappeared from official government sites. Gretchen Gehrke, who studies government information at the Environmental Data & Governance Initiative, noted that they stopped using the term “climate change” and replaced it with vague terms like “sustainability.” “If we can’t name a problem, we can’t fix it,” she warned.

Similarly, the wording used for immigration could also change back to older terms. Instead of “undocumented immigrants,” the government might start using “illegal aliens.” This change can make people think differently about immigrants, portraying them as criminals instead of contributing members of our society. Nayna Gupta, from the American Immigration Council, explained how using harsh words can create a lack of empathy for these communities.

Another area where change is expected is LGBTQ rights. Trump’s team may remove words like “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” from government language, which worries many advocates. David Stacy from the Human Rights Campaign expressed his fear that this could hurt transgender people even more in society.

With the attention still on these critical issues, experts are watching closely for how language and policies may shift once Trump is back in charge.
