Rescue teams from the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have reached a flooded coal mine in Tin Kilo, Assam’s Dima Hasao district. At least nine workers are feared to be trapped inside since Monday morning. Divers from the Navy are ready to help as soon as they receive the go-ahead.
Deputy Commissioner of Dima Hasao, Simanta Kumar Das, said rescue efforts started early Tuesday morning, with a special NDRF team using divers to go into the mine, which is about 300 meters deep. Suction machines have been brought in to pump out the extra water. District disaster officer Riki B Phukan mentioned that they have not yet been able to contact the trapped miners and do not know how they are doing.
To support the rescue, the Army sent relief groups from places like Diphu in Assam and Dimapur in Nagaland. Lt. Col. Mahender Rawat, the Army’s public relations officer in Guwahati, said they have brought in expert divers, engineers, a medical team, and other help from the Army and Assam Rifles to join the rescue efforts. They are working closely with local authorities. Deep-sea divers from the Navy will join the operation as soon as they are cleared by officials in New Delhi.
