Record 901 Executions in Iran: UN Raises Alarm Over Rights Violations

Iran executed 901 people in 2023, including 31 women, many victims of domestic violence. This marks the highest execution rate since 2015, prompting UN concerns.

In Iran, the number of people executed last year reached 901, which includes 31 women. Some women were executed after being forced into marriage or for defending themselves against rape. Most of the executions were for drug-related crimes, but people who protested against the government or spoke out against it were also executed, especially after the 2022 protests triggered by the death of a young woman named Mahsa Amini while in police custody.

The United Nations said that the increase in executions is “deeply disturbing.” Volker Türk, the UN Human Rights Commissioner, urged Iran to put a stop to this growing number of executions. This number of executions, 901, is the highest since 2015 when 972 people were executed.

In 2024, 31 women were executed, which is the highest number in at least 15 years. Many of these women were charged with murder, and many were victims of domestic violence or forced marriage. One woman even killed her husband to protect her daughter from being harmed.

Masoud Pezeshkian, the reformist president of Iran, who was elected in July 2024, promised to work on better protecting the rights of women and minorities in the country.
