International flights have started again at Syria’s main airport in Damascus for the first time since rebel groups took control of the country last month. A Syrian Airlines flight took off for Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates at around 11:45 am local time. This is the first time since December 8 that regular international flights have been allowed to leave from this airport.

“It’s a new beginning,” said Anis Fallouh, the airport director. He confirmed that both incoming and outgoing international flights have resumed, with the first flight heading to Sharjah.

Before this, there were already planes bringing in aid and foreign officials to Syria, and domestic flights within Syria had also started again.

Just ten days after the rebels removed President Bashar al-Assad, the first flight to Aleppo took off from Damascus airport on December 18.
