Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kollengode in Kerala, has been sentenced to death by a court in Yemen. However, this sentence has not been approved by Yemen’s President, Rashad al-Alimi, according to the Yemeni embassy. They explained that the case was managed by the Houthi militias, who are in control of the area.
Nimisha was found guilty of killing a Yemeni citizen back in July 2017. Currently, she is in prison in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, which is held by the Houthis. A trial court gave her the death sentence in 2020, and the Supreme Judicial Council in Yemen confirmed it in November 2023.
The Indian government is paying close attention to this situation. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that they are doing everything they can to help Nimisha. “We are closely following the developments around the sentencing of Nimisha Priya. The government is extending all possible help,” he stated.
