Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau might announce his resignation this week as he faces growing pushback from within his own Liberal Party, according to the newspaper The Globe and Mail. Three unnamed sources told the paper that Trudeau could make the announcement as early as Monday, just before a big meeting of Liberal Party members on Wednesday. It’s still uncertain if he will stay on temporarily while the party searches for a new leader.
Trudeau became Prime Minister in 2015 and led his party to victories in 2019 and 2021. However, recent polls show that he is trailing behind Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre by 20 points.
Here are four reasons why Trudeau may step down:
1. Poor Poll Numbers: Current polls indicate Trudeau’s party may lose badly to the Conservatives in the next election, set for late October.
2. Corruption Scandal: Trudeau is involved in a big corruption investigation about the now-closed Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). This fund, worth over a billion dollars, was shut down after the government’s auditor found many problems, including money going to people who should not have received it. Critics believe Trudeau’s recent claims against India are just distractions from this scandal.
3. Pressure from Party Members: For months, many lawmakers in Trudeau’s party have been calling for him to step down. This pressure increased after his finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, resigned, saying she disagreed with him on policy. More than 20 Liberal members of parliament have publicly asked for his resignation while many others say he must go.
4. Failed U.S. Relations: Last November, Trudeau tried to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida to avoid a trade conflict, but since then, Trump has criticized him publicly, sparking embarrassment for the Prime Minister.
Trudeau had once promised a hopeful and progressive agenda, but the challenges of leading during the pandemic have made things harder. Some critics say he is using claims against India to gain support from certain voter groups while ignoring key domestic issues.
