The Tamil action movie “Maharaja,” directed by Nithilan Swaminathan and starring Vijay Sethupathi, had a big release in Chinese theaters. It opened in November 2024 and quickly became the highest-grossing Indian film in China since 2018. This success follows another Indian hit, “Secret Superstar,” featuring Zaira Wasim.
A spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy in India, Yu Jing, announced on her social media that “Maharaja” has made over ₹91.55 crore in China. She congratulated the team for their success with a post that included the film’s poster.
The release of “Maharaja” was significant because it was the first Indian film to come out in China after both countries agreed to improve their relationship. The movie about a barber in Chennai who tries to get back his stolen trash bin attracted a lot of attention. On its first day, it earned around ₹15.6 crore, according to the ticket sales website Maoyan.
Before its release, “Maharaja” received a high rating of 8.7/10 on Douban, a popular Chinese movie review site. This makes it one of the best-rated Indian films in recent years.
“Maharaja” also had a successful run in India, earning more than ₹100 crore when it came out on June 14. Movies like “3 Idiots,” “Dangal,” and “Secret Superstar” have also done well in China, showing that Indian films are becoming popular in the country. With around 86,000 theaters, China has the most cinema screens in the world!
