On Sunday, China announced 15 new plans to boost development in its western provinces. These plans will focus on building better transportation, like ports and airports. The General Administration of Customs said the goal is to connect trains, planes, boats, and trucks more efficiently in the west of China.
The plans will improve major airports in cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xi’an, and Urumqi. They will also create areas where goods can be stored and shipped easily, connecting them with ports and other transport systems. New ports will be built, and existing ones will be expanded.
China wants to strengthen its western regions, which have been less developed than the coastal areas. However, some western regions, like Xinjiang, face ethnic tensions and strict security measures, leading to concerns from some Western countries.
The western regions cover about two-thirds of China’s land and include Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Xinjiang, and Tibet. Last year, China’s Politburo called for new plans to revitalize rural areas, help reduce poverty, and improve energy resources. There are also efforts to connect these areas with Europe and South Asia through trade routes, including rail lines.
