In the run-up to the Delhi Assembly Elections, Congress candidate Alka Lamba criticized former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly using Rs 33 crores of taxpayer money to renovate his official home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lamba, who will be competing against CM Atishi in the Kalkaji constituency, pointed out that this money was spent on expensive items like carpets, curtains, fancy toilets, and even a swimming pool.
She highlighted that Kejriwal had previously claimed he wouldn’t take perks like a government bungalow or luxury car, making this spending even more questionable. In her view, the timing was bad since many people in Delhi are struggling with rising prices and inflation. Lamba asked why this money wasn’t used to help vulnerable women instead.
“Delhi residents learned from a headline that their so-called ‘common man’ Chief Minister spent a fortune on luxuries instead of helping those in need,” she stated. Lamba mentioned that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) conducted an audit of this spending, raising more concerns.
She called on Kejriwal to explain why he chose to spend taxpayer money on personal luxuries rather than addressing the real issues facing the people of Delhi, particularly during such challenging times.
The controversy over the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ renovation continues to unfold as the elections in February approach. Kejriwal, who stepped down as Chief Minister in September, left his official residence in October. The election dates are expected to be announced soon.
