U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is visiting New Delhi on January 5-6. During this trip, he will talk to Indian leaders about concerns related to Chinese dams. A U.S. official mentioned that the U.S. and its allies see India as an important partner against China’s growing power in Asia.
The official pointed out that Chinese dams, especially in the Mekong River area, can cause serious environmental problems for countries downstream. Ahead of Sullivan’s visit, they emphasized that Washington will listen to India’s worries about a new hydropower dam China plans to build in Tibet. This dam, which will be the biggest in the world, is expected to produce 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
While China claims this dam will not harm the environment or affect water supplies in India, the Indian government has raised alarms about it.
Sullivan’s talks may also cover topics like nuclear energy cooperation, artificial intelligence, space exploration, military licenses, and China’s economic issues. However, U.S. officials will not meet with the Dalai Lama while in India.
In recent years, India and the U.S. have grown closer, even though they sometimes disagree on issues like treatment of minorities in India, India’s relationship with Russia during the war in Ukraine, and the alleged targeting of Sikh separatists in the U.S. and Canada.
