New Delhi: Health officials are addressing concerns about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. Dr. Atul Goel, who leads the Health Services, reassured everyone that there is no need to panic. He encouraged people to take normal precautions.

“Hospitals are ready for the usual increase in respiratory illnesses that happen every winter,” Dr. Goel said. “Metapneumovirus is similar to common cold viruses. While it can make older adults and young children feel quite sick, we have not seen a big rise in cases for 2024. Every winter, we expect more people to catch respiratory diseases, but our hospitals have the supplies and beds to handle it.”

Dr. Goel recommended that anyone with a cough or cold should avoid close contact with others to stop the spread of illness and to take usual cold and fever medicines. He stressed that there is nothing to worry about right now.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is keeping a close watch on flu and respiratory infection cases in India. They are also in touch with international health agencies. “We will keep watching the situation and share updates,” officials said.

This news comes after reports of HMPV outbreaks in China. Data from December 16 to 22 showed an increase in serious respiratory infections there. However, the overall number of infections in China this year is lower than last year. Health experts expect a rise in respiratory illnesses in colder months, especially in the northern hemisphere.
