Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, recently spoke about the importance of improving logistics in India. He believes that both the states and private companies should work together to create action plans that will attract investments in the logistics sector. Goyal stressed the need for better plans at the local and regional levels to ensure goods can reach their final destinations quickly and efficiently.
During an event where he released the Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) 2024 report and honored winners of the Logistics Excellence, Advancement, and Performance Shield (LEAPS) 2024, he highlighted several key points. He mentioned the importance of green logistics, which means making transportation more eco-friendly. Goyal also pointed out the need for including more women in the logistics industry and making workforce diversity a priority.
He encouraged the use of new technologies—like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Analytics—to make the logistics sector more efficient. Skill development for workers is also crucial, according to Goyal.
Goyal emphasized that states should explore multi-modal hubs, which are places where different types of transportation come together, such as trains and trucks. This will help improve the flow of goods and reduce costs. He requested that state governments use a transparent bidding process to make land available for logistics projects.
The Minister introduced a new framework, called LEAD (Longevity, Efficiency and Effectiveness, Accessibility and Accountability, and Digitalisation), to help transform the logistics sector. He believes these steps will help make India a developed nation by the year 2047.
In the LEADS 2024 report, logistics performance was evaluated based on four main areas: Infrastructure, Services, Regulatory Environment, and Sustainable Logistics. The report showcases efforts made by various states and highlights what each state can do to improve logistics. Goyal praised everyone involved in making logistics a key player in India’s economic growth, urging the sector to aim for rapid progress.
