New Delhi – A month after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered the clean-up of Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium following Diljit Dosanjh’s concert, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) said the stadium is now clean. The DPCC’s report explained that the organiser is responsible for keeping the stadium tidy when it’s booked for events like concerts.
The concert took place on October 26 and 27, 2024, where many armoured decks were set up to cover the football field so it wouldn’t get damaged. After receiving complaints about litter, the NGT instructed the DPCC to ensure the stadium was returned to its original condition, removing trash and other debris. A clean-up report was required within two weeks.
After the concert, reports showed the stadium had lots of trash, like broken glass bottles, beer cans, and plastic wrappers. Athletes even tried to help clean up but couldn’t because it was such a big mess. On December 19, 2024, the DPCC inspected the stadium to see what had been done since the tribunal’s order. The report claimed the whole stadium was clean and that there was no trash anywhere, including on seats or near gates.
There were plenty of trash bins available for people to use, and they were all clean as well. The stadium also has a waste collection room where trash is gathered and taken away weekly. SAI (Sports Authority of India) officials explained that the inner areas were closed for athletes during the concert, but the outer grounds were open to the public.
The rules say that the organiser must keep the stadium clean during events. If it’s not clean within a day after the event, SAI will hire a cleaning service, and the organizer would have to pay from their security deposit. SAI has allowed non-sporting events in its stadiums since 2013. The concert attracted about 70,000 fans, and some trash was left on running tracks afterward.
