The Union government plans to spend Rs 1 lakh crore on big infrastructure projects in Delhi over the next two years, said Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. These projects will help fix the city’s pollution and traffic problems.
Fighting Pollution and Traffic
Gadkari highlighted how serious pollution and traffic jams have become in Delhi. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, the government is working hard to clean up the air and ease the traffic situation.
Current Projects and Delays
He mentioned that a huge project worth Rs 65,000 crore is currently in motion, and Rs 33,000 crore of this work is already finished. Gadkari promised that the upcoming projects will completely change Delhi’s look. However, some projects have been delayed because the Delhi government hasn’t provided the necessary funds.
Cleaning Rivers
Gadkari talked about efforts to clean the Yamuna River. Under the Namami Gange scheme, the government is making sure less dirty water flows into the river. Although the central government is pushing these projects forward, some delays are happening because the Delhi government isn’t paying its part.
Electric Vehicles to Reduce Pollution
To help reduce pollution, the government is introducing electric buses, cars, and scooters in Delhi. Gadkari noted that 40% of Delhi’s pollution comes from non-electric vehicles. He believes that with these changes, Delhi can reduce pollution significantly in the next five years.
Reducing Stubble Burning
Gadkari shared that stubble burning, which adds to pollution, has dropped by 20%. The government is using leftover crop waste to make CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), and 400 plants are being built to help with this. So far, 60 of these plants are up and running. One project in Panipat will turn waste into 1 lakh litres of ethanol, along with other resources that will create jobs and help farmers.
The government’s plan aims for long-lasting results in improving Delhi’s infrastructure while emphasizing sustainability and innovation.
