The world population grew by over 71 million people in 2024, reaching a total of 8.09 billion people as we welcomed the New Year. This growth of 0.9% is a little slower than last year, when the population increased by 75 million.
Looking forward to January 2025, experts expect 4.2 babies to be born and 2.0 people to die every second around the globe. In the United States, the population grew by 2.6 million people in 2024, bringing the total to 341 million on New Year’s Day.
In January 2025, it’s predicted that the U.S. will see one baby born every 9 seconds and one person pass away every 9.4 seconds. International migration is also playing a role, adding one person to the U.S. population every 23.2 seconds. All these factors combined mean that the U.S. population will increase by one person every 21.2 seconds!
So far this decade, the U.S. population has grown by nearly 9.7 million people, which is a 2.9% growth rate. In comparison, the 2010s saw a growth rate of just 7.4%, the lowest since the 1930s.
