Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a hunger strike for 35 days. On December 31, the Supreme Court will look at what the Punjab government is doing to help him get medical treatment. A team of officials from Punjab tried to convince Dallewal on December 29 to accept medical help, but he refused. He fears that if he goes to the hospital, he might be forced to leave the protest.

Farmers, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, are protesting at the Punjab-Haryana border near Khanauri. They want the government to promise them a minimum price for their crops.

The Supreme Court had previously told the Punjab government that it needs to take action to care for Dallewal’s health. On December 28, the court was not happy with the government’s efforts to move him to a hospital. The judges said it was the state’s job to make sure he gets the medical help he needs.

The court also said that if Punjab needs help, the central government should provide the necessary support. Dallewal has been on this hunger strike since November 26 at the Khanauri border, where farmers have gathered to push their demands after being stopped from marching to Delhi.
