South Korea is in a serious political mess right now as President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing big trouble. Investigators are looking into his recent decision to declare martial law, which means he tried to gain control of the country in a very strict way. On Monday, the Joint Investigation Headquarters asked a court to approve an arrest warrant for him because he didn’t show up for questioning. This is the first time in South Korea’s history that a sitting president is facing such severe action.

Yoon’s martial law declaration got him kicked out of his presidential role by parliament. Now, a constitutional court will decide if he should stay out of office for good. This whole situation has put South Korea into its biggest political crisis in many years. Things got even messier when his replacement, Han Duck-soo, was also impeached for not getting important bills signed.

Yoon, who used to be a prosecutor, was called to answer questions three times but didn’t go each time, including by the latest deadline. He faces serious charges of insurrection, which could lead to life in prison or even worse. A group made up of police, defense officials, and anti-corruption agents is investigating him. According to a report, Yoon had even told the military they could use their weapons to forcefully enter the parliament during his attempt to impose martial law.
