A spokesperson for the German government said on Monday that Elon Musk, a billionaire and one of the richest people in the world, is trying to affect the upcoming elections in Germany, which are happening in February. This follows Musk’s support for Germany’s far-right party, the AfD, in an article in a major German newspaper.

The spokesperson stated, “It is true that Musk is trying to influence the federal election.” They added that while Musk is free to share his opinion, sometimes it can be seen as “nonsense.”

In his piece, Musk claimed, “only the AfD can save Germany,” and called the party “the last spark of hope for this country.” He expressed that the party could help bring about a future with economic growth, cultural stability, and innovation. Musk justified his comments by saying that his investments in Germany give him the right to talk about the country’s issues.

Musk mentioned that the description of the AfD as a right-wing extremist party is incorrect, pointing out that the party’s leader has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka. He questioned whether that aligns with the ideas of Adolf Hitler.

Musk’s statements have ignited discussions in German media about the limits of free speech. Known for his controversial views, Musk has also supported Donald Trump’s political campaign in the past.
