The Sabarimala temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, will reopen on Monday for this year’s Makaravilakku festival. The temple will open at 4 PM, with the priest, Melshanthi S. Arun Kumar Namboothiri, performing a special ceremony along with the head priest, Tantri Kandararu Rajeevaru.
Pilgrims will be able to climb the sacred 18 steps to see the deity after the Melshanthi lights a ceremonial fire inside the temple. The temple was closed on December 26 after the mandala puja, which is a special prayer service that many people attended. This event marked the end of the 41-day first part of the yearly pilgrimage season
