The Congress party accused the central government of insulting former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by not giving him a special memorial. In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) brought up the funeral of another ex-Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao, saying that the Gandhi family has not shown proper respect to non-Gandhi leaders within the Congress party.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi dismissed the Congress’s claims as “cheap politics.” He pointed out that, not only did they fail to honor Manmohan Singh, but they also neglected Rao and former President Pranab Mukherjee. Joshi told reporters that when Rao died, the Congress did not give him the respect he deserved and did not even award him the Bharat Ratna, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia questioned why the Congress has not built a memorial for Rao, despite his important role in India’s economic transformation. He also challenged Priyanka Gandhi to show pictures of her family paying respects to Rao when he passed away.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also criticized the Congress, saying they ignored Manmohan Singh during his time as Prime Minister, and that Sonia Gandhi held the real power instead.
Manmohan Singh, who was 92 years old and played a key role in India’s economic growth, passed away recently. His funeral took place at the Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi. The Congress party claimed that the government poorly managed the funeral and that it was disrespectful to Singh.
