On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met D Gukesh, the new world chess champion. At just 18 years old, Gukesh wowed everyone by beating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore. He is now the youngest chess world champion ever, even younger than the famous Garry Kasparov, who won at 22.
PM Modi shared his excitement on ‘X’, saying, “I had a great talk with Gukesh and his parents. This young player shows so much confidence, calmness, and humility!” He also mentioned that he has watched Gukesh for several years and admired his determination and hard work.
Gukesh is only the second Indian to win this title after the legendary Viswanathan Anand, who helped train Gukesh. This year has been amazing for Gukesh. He won the Candidates Tournament in Toronto, which made him the youngest challenger for the world title. He also helped India win gold for the first time in the Chess Olympiad in Budapest this year.
During their meeting, PM Modi praised Gukesh’s parents, saying they played a big role in Gukesh’s success. “Every athlete needs supporting parents,” he noted. Gukesh gifted the PM the special chessboard he used to win the championship, which is signed by both him and Ding Liren. PM Modi expressed how much he cherishes this gift.
After the meeting, Gukesh felt incredibly grateful. “Meeting the Prime Minister was one of the best moments of my life,” he shared on ‘X’. He thanked the PM for taking time to meet him and inspiring young people like himself. Gukesh also felt amazed when Modi discussed his chess games, saying it was a surreal experience
