Nitish Reddy made headlines on Saturday as he became the third youngest Indian player to score a century in his first Test match in Australia. Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was so impressed that he gave Reddy a standing ovation from the commentary box. Gavaskar praised the young player, saying, “What a wonderful shot! This is just the beginning for Reddy. He has a great mix of talent and temperament. Fantastic innings, young man! Keep going!”
Before the Border-Gavaskar series, not many knew about Reddy, but he stepped up big time with his first Test century—an unbeaten 105 runs. His innings helped India reach 358 runs for nine wickets, although they still trail Australia’s first innings score of 474. Rain ended the play early on the third day, giving India a strong chance to draw the match.
Reddy’s bravery and his partnership with Washington Sundar, who scored 50 runs, turned the game in India’s favor. India was in a tough spot after Rishabh Pant got out, leaving them at 191 for six. Reddy almost got stuck on 99 runs when fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah got out, leaving him with last batsman Mohammed Siraj. There was tension in the air as Siraj faced Pat Cummins, the Australian captain. But Siraj managed to survive, letting Reddy enjoy his big moment.
After getting his fifty, Reddy celebrated with a playful “Pushpa” pose and then struck a cool “Salaar” pose for his century. He has been India’s best player in the series, and this debut century couldn’t have come at a better time, especially in such an iconic stadium.
