On Friday, Qazigund town in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, experienced its first snowfall, leading to around 2,000 vehicles becoming stuck. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reported this situation and spoke with the Deputy Commissioner to address the issue.
CM Abdullah mentioned that heavy vehicles are being allowed through, and efforts are underway to clear the other stuck cars. In a post on social media, he stated, “I talked with the DC about the road situation between Qazigund and the tunnel. The icy roads have created a lot of traffic. The stuck vehicles are slowly moving, and help is being provided where needed.” He also asked that vehicles with families and children be given priority for assistance and said arrangements for overnight shelter would be made if necessary. An ambulance is on standby to respond to any medical emergencies.
On Friday, CM Abdullah traveled from Jammu to Srinagar. He shared updates about the snowfall, saying, “It snowed a lot from Banihal to Srinagar. Conditions were very dangerous, and I learned there are about 2,000 cars stuck between the tunnel and Qazigund. My office is in touch with the South Kashmir administration. Even though the snow has been cleared, the road remains very slippery.”
The beautiful city of Srinagar welcomed winter with its first snowfall this year, and Baramulla district also saw some fresh snow on the same day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light rain and snow for Jammu and Kashmir until December 30.
