Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a special bond with the city of Amritsar, where he grew up. He was born in Gah, a place that is now in Pakistan, but his family moved to Amritsar during Partition. He completed his schooling there and graduated in economics from Hindu College.
Singh’s half-brother, Surjit Singh Kohli, shared that he had a great love for his grandmother, who took care of him after their mother passed away when he was very young. After they migrated, Singh’s family lived in a rented house in Amritsar until he finished school.
Rajinder Loomba, a retired professor from Hindu College, remembered that Singh always enjoyed studying economics. He also mentioned that Singh’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, has roots in Amritsar too. A few years ago, Singh returned to Hindu College as a special guest for an alumni meeting. He met with the staff, talked about his old teachers, and took photos with students, reminiscing about his time there.
Local resident Raj Kumar, 71, remembered where Singh used to live, near the famous Golden Temple. He described Singh’s family as very kind and humble. Unfortunately, the house where they lived is now in poor condition because it has been empty for a long time.
Many locals fondly remember Singh. They noted that during his time as Prime Minister, he worked hard to improve Amritsar. Under his leadership, the UPA government approved many projects for the holy city.
Manmohan Singh, who played a major role in changing India’s economy, passed away on Thursday night in Delhi at the age of 92. He was well-respected around the world for his work in finance and economics.
