On Friday, the Israeli military started an operation against Hamas fighters close to one of the last hospitals still working in northern Gaza, called Kamal Adwan Hospital. This came after the hospital announced that five of its workers had died due to an Israeli airstrike.
The Israeli military claimed that the hospital had become a hiding place for Hamas militants. They say they had information about “terrorist activities” happening near the hospital, which led them to launch operations in that area. They promised to do their best to protect innocent civilians, patients, and doctors.
Since October 6, Israel has intensified its attacks in northern Gaza, aiming to stop Hamas from regrouping. Before the latest operation, the military said they helped civilians and medical staff leave the area safely. However, Hamas accused the Israeli forces of storming the hospital, claiming they forced doctors, patients, and others to leave. They also said some of those evacuated were taken away without their knowledge or contact.
The hospital director, Hossam Abu Safiyeh, had raised alarms about the hospital’s safety, insisting it was being attacked intentionally. The World Health Organization described conditions at the hospital as terrible, stating it was barely able to function.
