In Beirut, Lebanon, the wife and daughter of a cousin of deposed Syrian President Bashar Assad were arrested at the airport. They were trying to leave the country using fake passports on Friday. Rasha Khazem, the wife of Duraid Assad, and their daughter Shams were stopped while trying to fly to Egypt. They had crossed into Lebanon illegally from Syria. The Lebanese General Security is currently holding them.
Just the day before, Rasha’s father-in-law, Rifaat Assad, was able to fly out of Lebanon using his real passport without any issues. Rifaat, who is Bashar Assad’s uncle, is being accused of serious crimes, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, for acts he committed more than 40 years ago in Syria.
Earlier this month, after the fall of Assad’s regime in Syria, many Syrians are believed to have entered Lebanon. The authorities in Lebanon have arrested more than 20 people who were part of the former Syrian military and security services. Some of these individuals were caught when they tried to sell their weapons.
Furthermore, Lebanon’s public prosecution office received a request from Interpol to arrest Jamil al-Hassan, a former head of Syrian intelligence under Assad. Lebanon’s interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati has stated that the country will cooperate with Interpol regarding this request.
