A passenger airplane from Azerbaijan crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, and sources say it was hit by a Russian air defense system. The Embraer jet was flying near the city of Aktau when it went down, causing the loss of 38 lives.
The flight, which was going from Baku in Azerbaijan to Grozny in Chechnya, suddenly changed its route after flying far off course. It ended up crashing on the other side of the Caspian Sea. Russian authorities suggested that the crash might have been caused by a bird strike, but didn’t explain why the plane was flying over the water.
This incident happened after several Ukrainian drone attacks occurred in the Chechnya region of southern Russia. On the day of the crash, the closest Russian airport on the plane’s route was closed. Officials from Russia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan are all calling for investigations into what happened.
