A surprising 86% of more than 8,300 candidates who ran in the Lok Sabha elections this year lost their deposits. The Election Commission revealed that in 2024, a total of 12,459 people applied to run for election, which is more than the 11,692 who applied in 2019. After some nominations were rejected or withdrawn, 8,360 candidates were able to compete in the elections. This is a small increase from the 8,054 candidates in 2019.
Out of 8,360 candidates, a big number—7,190—lost their deposits, which is 86%. These losses break down to 584 candidates from established parties, 68 from recognized state parties, 2,633 from unrecognized parties, and 3,095 independent candidates. In 2019, 6,923 candidates lost their deposits. This year, 3,921 independent candidates participated, but only seven won.
Independent candidates received 2.79% of all valid votes. To contest in Lok Sabha elections, each candidate must pay a deposit of ₹25,000 (₹12,500 for SC and ST candidates). If they don’t win or get more than one-sixth of total valid votes, they lose this money.
