U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said he will work hard to bring back the death penalty for serious criminals like “violent rapists, murderers, and monsters” when he takes office on January 20. He made this announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social. This statement came after President Joe Biden said he had changed the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal inmates on death row to life in prison without a chance for parole.

Trump said, “As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children.” During his previous term from 2017 to 2021, Trump restarted federal executions after a break of almost 20 years. In contrast, Biden, who is against the death penalty, put a stop to federal executions when he became president in January 2021.

While Biden’s decision to commute sentences cannot be reversed by the next president, future cases could still see a stronger push for the death penalty. The Trump transition team responded to Biden’s actions by calling them wrong and said they favor criminals who are “among the worst killers in the world.”
