The Indian government has announced new chief justices for the Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand high courts. This comes nearly three months after the Supreme Court had suggested these changes. The Union law minister, Arjun Ram Meghwal, shared this update in a post.
Justice GS Sandhawalia, who works in the Punjab and Haryana high court, will be the new chief justice for Himachal Pradesh. Meanwhile, Justice G Narendar, who is currently a judge in the Andhra Pradesh high court, will take the position for Uttarakhand. Justice Narendar replaces Justice Ritu Bahri, who retired recently.
Justice Narendar, who belongs to the other backward classes (OBC), was made a judge in the Karnataka high court back in January 2015 and then moved to the Andhra Pradesh high court in October. He is the most senior judge in his current court. Justice Sandhawalia has been a judge since September 2011 and will officially take on his new role on October 18, succeeding Justice Rajiv Shakder, who is retiring.
Previously, in July, Justice Sandhawalia was suggested for a different role in Madhya Pradesh, but that decision was changed in September. It’s worth noting that Justice Sandhawalia’s father was also a chief justice in the Punjab and Haryana high court from 1978 to 1983.
