Kolkata: On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court said “no” to bail requests from former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee and four other previous public workers. They are part of a case involving a suspected scam related to hiring for school jobs. The court, led by Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, also turned down the bail requests of former West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) chairman Subires Bhattacharya, former state secondary education board president Kalyanmoy Ganguly, ex-advisory committee chairman S P Saha, and former SSC secretary Ashok Saha.
Before this, two judges, Arijit Banerjee and Apurba Sinha Roy, had different opinions about the bail requests from the five accused. After that, the chief justice assigned the case to Justice Chakraborty for a final decision.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) fought against granting bail. They explained that while the investigation into the five accused has been completed, they are still looking into other problems related to the hiring. The CBI’s lawyer argued that granting bail at this time could influence the investigation since the accused are influential individuals. Chatterjee, who was in charge of education from 2011 to 2021, filed a bail request along with the other ex-public servants, who have been in jail for almost two years due to this school job scam.
