The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a new research centre dedicated to creating advanced AMOLED displays. These displays will be used in smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and other gadgets. The ‘AMOLED Research Centre’ (ARC) is known as a National Centre of Excellence and is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and Tata Sons.
The goal of the ARC is to invent a new way to make AMOLED displays that can be used across many digital devices. S. Krishnan, secretary of MeitY, explained that this new method focuses on being quick and efficient. This approach aims to create small, modular factories for manufacturing these displays.
The centre is also working on making prototypes for OLED lighting and organic photovoltaic power sources, which could help mobile phones. V. Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, believes this centre will contribute to India’s efforts to build a strong semiconductor industry. The global market for AMOLED displays is currently worth about $15 billion and is expected to grow even more.
The researchers at ARC are focusing on a new method to pattern AMOLED displays, which could reduce production costs. They are trying to ensure that smaller pieces of glass can still be used efficiently and quickly, creating a new and simpler way to produce displays.
The centre is located in the electrical engineering department at IIT Madras. While the main focus is on AMOLED displays, researchers are also exploring white OLEDs (used for lighting and TVs) and organic photovoltaic devices.
