Lisa Su is the CEO of AMD, a big chip-making company worth $210 billion. Recently, she talked about the work culture at AMD, where employees often work on weekends and have early morning meetings after reading emails sent late at night. This tough work style may not be for everyone. A former AMD executive, Patrick Moorhead, says those who don’t keep up with their work find it hard to stay at the company.
Lisa expects her team to discuss complicated documents during these morning meetings right after sending them out at midnight. She is also very involved in the details, even checking prototype chips when they arrive from the factory.
Lisa was born in Taiwan but moved to the U.S. when she was only three years old so her dad could go to graduate school. Growing up in New York City, she learned how to write simple computer programs at a young age. Lisa studied at MIT, where she got her degree in electrical engineering and later earned a PhD in the same field.
She started her career at Texas Instruments and IBM before joining AMD in 2012 as a Vice President. Just two years later, she became CEO. Lisa feels lucky about her career, saying she got to try different jobs every couple of years. Today, AMD is worth $210 billion under her leadership.
