In Kolkata, people are angry after two suspects in the rape and murder of a doctor got bail. This happened a day ago, and on Saturday, members of the Left parties and Congress held protests across the city. They claimed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not done enough to bring justice in this case.

Congress supporters marched from Rabindra Sadan to the CBI office at Nizam Palace, criticizing the agency for not being able to charge the suspects. During this march, protesters raised their party flags and shouted slogans like “We want justice” and “Justice for Tilottoma.” Police blocked their way to the CBI office, resulting in a scuffle between the protesters and officers.

At the same time, junior doctors took part in a rally, starting from Karunamayee to another CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake. They walked a full kilometer to show their anger about the delay in charges against those responsible for the crime on August 9. The parents of the murdered doctor also joined the rally, with her mother saying, “We will fight for justice and it is our right.”

Protesters held signs that read, “If the system has failed, we will make it work for justice.” Separate rallies were also held by SUCI activists and the SFI, a student group.

On Friday, a court in Kolkata granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, a former police officer. They were released because the CBI did not file charges against them within the required 90 days.
