Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, a member of India’s National Conference party and a Lok Sabha MP, announced that he plans to ask for the removal of Allahabad High Court Judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav. This follows Yadav’s comments at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event that many believe were disrespectful to Muslims.
Mehdi says he has the backing of members from several political parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, and Trinamool Congress. He stated, “I am submitting an impeachment notice based on Article 124(4) of the constitution to remove Judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav due to his offensive remarks.”
At the VHP meeting, Justice Yadav spoke about the Uniform Civil Code, calling it a way to promote peace, gender equality, and secularism. However, videos of his speech, which many found inflammatory, circulated quickly on social media, leading to outcry from opposition politicians. They criticized both his statements and his attendance at the VHP event.
Mehdi expressed that he currently has support from seven members of Parliament but needs a total of 100 signatures to move forward with the impeachment. So far, MPs from different parties have agreed to support him: “More than seven MPs have signed, including Asaduddin Owaisi and various other members. I appreciate their support,” Mehdi said.
He also mentioned that he has talked to other politicians from different parties, who promised to consult their leadership before signing the motion. “I believe they will support this action because they care about the principles and values of our country,” Mehdi added.
