The Central government hasn’t given any land to the Waqf Board since 2019, said the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Minister Tokhan Sahu explained that land issues are mainly handled by state governments, so the central ministry doesn’t have records of land given by them. He also confirmed that no land has been provided by the Government of India to the Waqf Board in this time.
In August, the government introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which then went to a special committee after a lot of debate. The government claimed that the new law would not interfere with mosques. However, the opposition argued that it unfairly targets Muslims and goes against the Constitution.
Recently, Jagdambika Pal, who leads the special committee, mentioned that they have contacted state governments to find out details about disputed Waqf properties in their areas. This came after a meeting of the committee on December 5, which was the first after they received extra time to work until the end of the next year’s Budget Session.
