Man Arrested for Attempting to Hijack Flight from Mexico to the U.S.

A man tried to hijack a flight in Mexico to the U.S. but was stopped by crew members. The incident highlights ongoing issues with crime in Guanajuato.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on Sunday after he tried to take control of a plane flying from Mexico to the United States. The Airbus A320 took off from Leon, Guanajuato, at 7:17 AM and was headed to Tijuana. About 45 minutes into the flight, it had to make an emergency landing in Guadalajara.

Officials said the man attacked a flight attendant and tried to enter the cockpit to change the plane’s direction. Luckily, the crew members managed to hold him down and quickly notified everyone to land safely in Guadalajara.

The airline, Volaris, reported that the man claimed a close family member had been kidnapped. He said he was threatened with death if he continued to Tijuana.

After the man was arrested, the flight was able to continue to Tijuana as planned. It’s important to note that Guanajuato, the area the flight left from, experiences a lot of violence and crime due to drug cartels, including kidnapping.
